Live tour of Jewish Arad, Romania

Join BZD and Travel To Live as we venture out to the Jewish community of Arad, Romania. Arad, an essential hub in Western Transylvania and at the crossroads of East and West, has a complex and vibrant history of more than 900 years. This city was once part of the Hungarian Kingdom, Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and most recently, Romania. Arad has a vast legacy of multiculturalism built by Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, Jews, and others. At the end of the 19th century, the beginning of the 20th, Jews had a significant impact on the city’s growth, reaching over 10,000 people before WW2, more than 10% of the total population.

On our tour, we will explore the old city where the Jewish Community started in 1717, its first synagogues and Rabbis, and its growth and involvement in the city’s development. The story of Aron Chorin, Arad’s most prominent Rabbi and one of the founders of Neolog Judaism – the reform movement in Hungary – together with the Synagogue’s interior is the highlight of this memorable tour. With the tour guide, Dan Codre, we will stroll live through the streets of Arad, learning about Jewish life and its meaningful people and places.
