Warhol Women: Iconic Paintings of Leading Female Figures with Ronnit Vasserman

We will explore Andy Warhol’s fascination with women and femininity from the 1960s through the 1980s. He was devoted to representing women regardless of age, race or fame. We will view portraits of Hollywood screen icons Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Judy Garland, and entertainers, Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton, and Liza Minneli. Andy Warhol was also fascinated by powerful women, like Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. The virtual lecture will include images of women outside the limelight, such as the 1974 portrait of Julia Warhol, his late mother. The Factory made silkscreen portraits seem impersonal and detached at first, but upon examination, they convey depictions of who a woman truly is. Warhol was able to capture women from the eye of a man without sexualizing their image.
