November 29, 1947 – UN Partition Vote

On November 29, 1947 the United Nations adopted Resolution 181 – the Partition Plan, which was a key international legal step toward the establishment of the modern State of Israel in May 1948.  This was a key moment for Zionism – coming just 50 years after Theodor Herzl convened the first Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897 and proclaimed: “At Basel I founded the Jewish State. If I said this out loud today l would be greeted by universal laughter. In five years perhaps, and certainly in fifty years, everyone will perceive it”
