Delegates to the San Remo conference in Italy, 25 April 1920

In 2020 we mark an important Zionist anniversary – the Centennial of the San Remo Conference.

By 1920, the Ottoman Empire had been defeated by Great Britain, France and their allies in World War I.  The San Remo Conference, held in that town in Italy from April 19-26, 1920, was convened to determine the boundaries of the post-Ottoman Middle East.  It was at this conference where the Balfour Declaration, the historic British statement of 1917, calling for the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine, became part of the international consensus.  The United Kingdom was tapped as the mandatory power with the obligation to implement the Balfour Declaration.  The San Remo Resolution gave international legal confirmation and legitimacy to the Balfour Declaration and helped lead to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
